Steltman Chair
A case study in physical prototyping

"Originally designed in 1963 by Gerrit Reitveld, the Steltman Chair lives on today as an iconic piece of mid-century modern furniture. Tasked with analyzing, drafting, and eventually reproducing this chair, a team of three students including myself began a journey to truly understand Reitveld’s design."

Following exact measurements was tricky because the Steltman chair was produced using European lumber dimensions. To match his original design as best as possible, our team laminated three ½ inch plywood sheets together and cut all final pieces from this sheet. Wood peg joints and glue hold the final chair together. A custom paint color was chosen to finish the chair, and the seat was finished in a clear polyurethane to highlight the materiality of the project.
